GoT Season 7 Preview

The long wait is finally over and tomorrow, over a year since season 6 ended we can all tuck ourselves safely away and embroil ourselves in a brand new series of Weterosi adventure.

I won't lie, it's been a hard 12 months. I've found myself awake and confused at night shouting "King in the North" at the darkness or holding doors endlessly for strangers and welling up. But I've made it through, just.

So, where are we now and what can we expect to see in the coming weeks?

Who's even still alive?

Well, here's a little run through of who's still about, where they are and what I think they might be up to in season 7.

Cersei Lannister

She had quite the time in season 6 didn't she? Things didn't exactly get off to a flyer for her, with Myrcella returning from Dorne all dead and stuff. But she was fiery throughout and you always knew she had a couple of extra cards up her sleeve to go with her aces of Maester Qyburn and The Mountain. And boy did she end up playing them at the end. Stealing Varys' "little birds" and then exacting wonderful revenge upon all of her foes. I mean, blowing up the High Septum when it's full of her enemies is very Cersei indeed. Of course, this meant that King "Wet Blanket" Tommen went and flopped pathetically out of a window and suddenly Westeros has a brand new queen.

Thoughts: She's got everything she every really wanted now and is going to rule with an iron fist. But she doesn't really play the long game very well, so the coming winter could be her undoing.

Jaime Lannister (and Bron)

Had a fine old time exploring the world last season. They were largely away from the main drama, but played a big part in the action in Dorne, before being sent off to deal with the siege of Riverrun. They came back to King's Landing just in time to see Cersei's coronation.

Thoughts: Jamie is going to be fuming with Cersei, but will he make any prophecies come true?

Jon Snow

If anyone had a good season last time out, it was this guy. Let's face it, if you're dead when it starts, the only way is up, right. After spending may seasons dealing with the threat north of The Wall, he was a bit more self-indulgent last time out. After avenging his own death at Castle Black, he pottered about the North, gathering followers before embarking on the utterly fantastic Battle of the Bastards. Now residing in Castle Black as the new King in the North, he's got a big season ahead of him. Especially with the revelation of his true parentage.

Thoughts: He's had a whole lot thrust upon him, when all he's really wanted is to do the right thing and protect everyone from the White Walkers. Now that he has a genuine claim to the Iron Throne though (even if he doesn't know it yet), will he go for it? I'm thinking he'll find out all about it, but won't give a toss about power in the end.

Sansa Stark

She had a pretty rough time, being married to one vicious little git after another. Now she's finally free of them and back here she belongs, in Winterfell. I get the feeling that she is quite happy to let Jon lead the house while she pulls the strings, at least for now. But the creepy interest Littlefinger has in her is growing and we all know how he can treat his wives.

Thoughts: She's going to start resenting Jon's growing power and respect as the season draws on. Littlefinger is going to think he has her in one of his traps (probably to make her his wife now), but season 7 Sansa is going to be far too wily for him.

Daenerys (of a squillion surnames)

Another one who had a pretty good time of it last season. Captured by the Dothraki at the start, she finished it in charge of the largest khal ever assembled, on top of her Unsullied and her dragons. With the help of Theon and Yara, she now has iron ships and is crossing the sea to Weteros proper.

Thoughts: We'll finally et to see what these common people really think of her now. I'm thinking she's going to listen to her advisors and be cautious, starting small, before heading to King's Landing later on. She's either going to ally herself with Jon, or have a massive bust up with Cersei.

Tyrion Lannister

Well, he had a chance at ruling a city and he mucking it right up. But he's best used as an advisor, so it wasn't much of a shock. Now he's on a boat with Team Dany, pointed straight for home.

Thoughts: Surely he has to reunite with Cersei and Jamie. Imagine when Jon and Sansa were united last season, only the opposite. It'll be spicy.

Arya Stark

After spending forever doing nothing, but promising so much, she finally stopped being no-one and started being a badass. We last saw her flourishing her gourmet skills, moments before she turned Walder Frey into a Pez dispenser. Brilliant.

Thoughts: She's going to be cranky this season and causing more people to bleed from fresh now holes she puts in them than ever before.

Brandon Stark

Where to go with this lad? He's been so rubbish for so long. Frankly his best season was the one where we didn't get to watch him finish puberty. He spent most of last season being a burden for all his mates, who got the payoff of watching him lie about watching the past, or warging into Hodor. Oh, Hodor. don't even get me started; he was the real hero of this show and I am still livid that some gormless teenager has gone and got him killed. We last saw Bran being dragged into the snow after he had a right mare with the Night King.

Thoughts: He's the three-eyed raven now, so that should mean he's got some big stuff on the way. Given how it's been with Bran though, he'll probably just be boring and get some more people killed. I'm sure he'll get in touch with Jon, Sansa, or someone else who might care, to tell them about Jon's lineage. Probably when they lean on the epic tree in Winterfell and he uses his greensight on it. I've read some great theories about the role he could play in this whole thing though and I hope one of them comes to pass, because he is just so dull otherwise.

White Walkers

We've known they're about and we've known they're coming since day one. Now they're here. We saw what these icy bastards are capable of at Hardhome and it's not good news for anyone who's still alive. They've also got themselves a geotag on Bran now, so they can follow him about all they like. I'm thinking this is their route south of The Wall. We have learnt that dragonglass and Valyrian steel can make total fools of them, so we can see a bit more of this I'm sure.

Thoughts: I reckon the big war at the end of the series will be against these guys, so I'm not expecting their move until the end of this season. I'm sure they'll still be a menacing nuisance though, just not quite centre screen all season.

Best of the rest

The Hound. Last seen with The Men Without Banners, looking to start again (again). it's surely only a matter of time until he meets his brother in "Cleganebowl".

Littlefinger. Saved the day for Jon with his knights of The Vale, but is a creepy creeperson with Sansa. This guys had uppence coming, but always dodges it. He's either going to be killed off in some gammy way, or end up on the throne.

Brienne and Pod. Jamie let them slip away in a boat after he took Riverrun. Presumably heading back up north. They have a long old way to go, so could they bump into anyone else in that region, say... Arya? How well would Brienne's Lannister sword go down with that feisty assassin?

Olenna Tyrell, Varys and The Sandsnakes. If there were a Game of Thrones band, this should be its name. We only had a brief shot of them, plotting their revenge on Cersei. Expect a lot more plotting and a smidge of action.

Jorah "The Explorer" Mormont. Last commanded to find a cure for his greyscale before pooting off into the desert. Who knows whats going to happen with him, who he'll meet, or what he'll do.

Melisandre. Exiled by Jon Snow after confessing to the murder of Princess Shireen. She was last seen heading south. I'm thinking it won't be long before she meets some bannerless men.

Ser Davos Seaworth. He's pretty much shacked up with the Starks now. We'll see more of him doing his thing for a while. He's almost certainly going to break our hearts with a tragic death because we love him.

Theon and Yara Greyjoy. Sailing away with Dany now and running from their crazed uncle. Expect them to have a scrap with their foes at some point.

Samwell Tarly. He's up in the Citadel, doing himself some reading. Let's hope he can find out how to beat the baddies that are on their way before it's all too late.

Gendry. This geezer was last seen rowing into the night way back in season 4. Now we're looking at season 7, it's pretty likely that he's finally found land. By pretty likely, I mean, there's footage of him that's been filmed and he's kicking butt. This dude is the awesome bastard son of King Robert Baratheon and another heir to the Iron Throne. Ser Davos set him free of Stannis to stop his sacrifice and we haven't seen him since. It looks like he's back now, with a warhammer (Robert's weapon of choice) and an attitude. Sick.

Final musings

It's going to be good, that's for sure. Someone we love is going to come a cropper. Where Dany heads will surely have a huge bearing on how the season goes, but those White Walkers are going to be looming large all the way through.

And just remember, a king has died in every season so far (Robert, Renly, Robb, Joffrey, Stannis and Tommen). With three to pickfrom currently (Cersei, Dany and Jon), we're spoilt for choice. Jon's already snuffed it once, so I think he's safe and surely, surely, not even Game of Thrones would kill Dany after her six seasons of trying to cross the Narrow Sea? So I'm looking at Cersei to come a cropper now, especially if that prophecy is going to come true. I've been thinking it'll be Jamie who kills her for the longest time, but now, I might move my money to Tyrion. Let's see.

I can't wait for tomorrow night, nor for the weeks to come!

Valar mughulis.
